Cheaters who Tried to Make a Fortune at Cheating the Blackjack Tables
Every game at the casino has been the target of some kind of scam or cheating method. The lure of easy money is a strong one, and there are always unscrupulous individuals out there looking for a quick buck. It’s important to know about blackjack cheating – not in order to cheat, but to know if you are the one being cheated.
No one can say for sure how common black jack cheating is. This is because only the bad cheaters get caught, while the good ones get away with it. In Las Vegas, casinos keep a book of all known cheaters in order to prevent them from getting back onto the gaming floor. Of course, cheating is almost impossible at online casinos because gaming software runs over an encrypted connection. Believe it or not, one of the most effective blackjack cheating scams is called “take the money and run”. This is when a player makes a big bet and if they win they walk away, but if they loose they run away – with the casino’s chips right out the closest door! Cheaters Caught Red Handed In October, 2010 three suspects were arrested in California for running a card marking scam that netted $24,000 in blackjack winnings. Card marking is one of most common blackjack scams.
Cheaters usually mark the high cards – aces and 10s with some kind of substance that only they can see with special glasses. Another way to mark cards is by bending them in order to make a mark. This is not a very effective strategy as most other players will notice you defacing the casino’s cards. In this case, which happened at the Turlock Poker Room, the cheaters greased the edges of the 10s and face cards, in the middle of the 7s, 8s, and 9s, and all other cards were left unmarked. Usually marking cards with oil would get you caught fast. After all who wouldn’t know that cards were being marked with such an obvious substance. They had help from a pit boss who was supposed to be on the lookout for cheaters like them. The casino manager, Johnny Soto, told the press after the news broke that the cheaters really weren’t playing that well even with all the extra information that they had from the marked cards. For example they knew the dealer had a low card but still stayed on 12 and hit on 18. However, even with their bad playing skills the team was able to win $24,000 in a period of 30 minutes. Winning this amount of money in such a short time usually tips off casino management that something fishy is going on. After all, there are hot streaks, but sometime players are too hot to be playing honestly. After they were busted by the cops all three suspects are facing some serious time behind bars. They are being charged with burglary, conspiracy, and grand theft – all felony convictions that could carry a sentence of four years.
