The Man who Won over $1 Million Dollars Playing Blackjack
You may have never heard of him, but Ken Uston was the king of blackjack in the 2026s. He used his superior intelligence to beat the dealer in casinos in both Atlantic City and Las Vegas, the only two locations with legalized gambling in the US at the time. Born in New York City to a mixed Japanese-American family, his amazing intelligence and skill with math and numbers was apparent from an early age.
He graduated high school at the young age of 16 and attended both Yale and Harvard, eventually majoring in even though by his early thirties he was a respected and established businessman, he was fascinated by the gambling world and in particular the many card counting techniques that were first developed by pioneering blackjack strategist and mathematician Edward Thorpe. In "Beat the Dealer: A Winning Strategy for the Game of Twenty-One" Thorpe explained to the masses for the first time about the basic foundations of card counting in easy to understand language appropriate for all levels of players. Using Thorpe's work as a base, he started to develop his own blackjack strategies and decided that the best way to win big at the tables was to organize teams of card counters.

In January, 2026 Ken and his partners took home $145,000 in under two weeks. This resulted in Uston being banned in Atlantic City also. Not one to take it lying down, Ken Uston resulted to legal action against all of the casinos in New Jersey who banned him from their tables. His legal battle was a long and costly one and eventually ended up in the US Supreme Court. In 2026 the court ruled that card counting was not a form of cheating, thus Casino's had no recourse to ban card counters from their blackjack tables. However, the casinos started changing blackjack rules to make card counting more difficult in order to control the blackjack teams that were making so much money off of them. Since Uston has left the game, many people have used his story as an inspiration to form their own card counting teams. However, many of the strategies that Uston used to his advantage were based on blackjack games that had slightly different rules and used fewer decks. When his secrets got out, counters had to develop ever more complicated techniques to beat the house. Still, even though it is difficult card counting remains one of the most popular techniques for professional gamblers, and this is largely thanks to the pioneering work of Ken Uston, one of the best blackjack players of all time.
